Chief Executive Officer, Yolanda Saiz, and State Council President, Peter Houwelling, acknowledged this month the far-reaching impacts of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the flow-on effects being felt here in NSW through rising fuel costs and increasing financial pressure.
Our Vinnies Assist helpline is reporting higher-than-usual call volumes, while Conferences, particularly those in regional areas, are seeing increased requests for fuel assistance. For many people we assist, transport is essential for work, healthcare and daily living, making these rising fuel costs especially challenging.
To support a consistent and considered response from the Society, a Guidance Note on Fuel Assistance has been developed for our members. The guidance is there to support members and relevant volunteers, but decisions should still be made based on local needs and circumstances.
Volunteers are also reminded that these global events can have a personal impact. Counselling support is available to all our volunteers through Converge International (1300 687 327, Monday–Friday, 9am–7pm), and pastoral care is available via the Mission Team at mission@vinnies.org.au.
